PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) singled home senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 13-12 victory over Salem State College in a non-conference baseball game at Panther Park.
PSU had rallied from an early 6-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth to take a 10-6 advantage. Salem State tied the game at 10-10 with four runs in the top of the sixth, only to see PSU regain the lead with single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seven innings. The Vikings again battled from behind to deadlock the contest at 12-all with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, but PSU won it with an unearned run in the last of the ninth.
Sophomore Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Panther offense with four hits. Sophomore Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) added three hits, while seniors Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa) collected two hits and two RBI apiece. Rousseau also had two hits, including the game-winner.
Freshman Marc Crove (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Derek Lyons (Danvers, Mass.) led the Vikings with two hits and three RBI apiece. Senior Mike Spinney (Saugus, Mass.) also contributed three hits and two RBI, and freshman Rob Kimber (Lynn, Mass.) hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to tie the game at 12-12.
The win snapped an eight-game losing skid for PSU, improving the Panthers to 6-23 overall, while Salem State drops to 16-14. PSU returns to action Friday with a make-up game at Panther Park against Castleton State (4:00 p.m.) Salem State returns home to host Westfield State on Saturday.
