PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Seniors Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) and Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.) delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday afternoon as Plymouth State University’s baseball team came from behind to snap a nine-game losing streak and defeat the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 4-3 in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader at Panther Park. The Mariners rebounded to win the nightcap, 13-7, to earn a split of the twinbill.
PSU sophomore Adam Neshe (Framingham, Mass.) was working on a strong pitching performance in the opener, striking out 15 batters through the first six innings. Neshe gave up a solo home run to junior Robert Webber (Marshfield, Mass.) in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead into the final inning, but Webber touched Neshe for a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give MMA a 3-2 lead.
The Panthers would not go down without a fight. Senior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H.) led off the last of the seventh with a single, and sophomore Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) reached on an error. Labossiere and Carpenter won the game for PSU with RBI singles, knocking in Mullin and Roberti.
The nightcap was a slugfest, with the Mariners scoring 13 runs on 14 hits and PSU plating seven runs on 12 hits. It was a 6-6 game through four innings, but MMA pulled away with one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Junior Gabe Stallions (Wareham, Mass.) led the Mariners offense with two hits, including a three-run triple in the fourth inning. Junior A.J. Garstang (Southington, Conn.) added a two-run homer for insurance in the seventh inning, and juniors Robert Webber (Marshfield, Mass.), Alex Foley (Andover, Mass.), and Bill Martin (Virginia Beach, Va.), senior Geoffrey White (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.) collected two hits apiece.
Junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) led the PSU hitters in the nightcap with a two-run double in the first inning and an RBI single in the third. Labossiere and Carpenter added two more hits apiece in the nightcap and scored two runs each. Sophomore Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, and freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H./Winnacunnet) added an RBI double.
PSU, 9-22 overall, visits Norwich on Wednesday for a non-conference game (3:30 p.m.) Mass Maritime, 9-16, returns home to host Newbury College on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.).
