CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plymouth State University baseball team stopped a six-game losing streak Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Castleton State College, 6-5 in extra innings and 8-2.
PSU registered 11 hits in the first game but needed one extra frame to win it. The Panthers plated three runs in the top of the eighth, as freshman Nick Jaskolka (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and juniors Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) delivered consecutive RBI singles. Guimond finished the game with three hits and two RBI, while Jaskolka and senior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) had two hits apiece. Sophomore Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) also cracked his second home run of the season.
Junior John Perkins (Nottingham, N.H.) picked up his first win with three innings of relief work, taking over from starter Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) in the fifth. Gabellieri got the Panthers out of trouble in the eighth to earn his first save.
The nightcap was close as well until the Panthers broke it open with four runs in the seventh inning, all four coming home on bases-loaded walks or hit by pitches. Senior Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa) provided the Panther offense earlier in the game, doubling and scoring in the fourth inning and knocking in a run with a double in the sixth.
Senior Mike Bradbury (Chatham, Mass.) and freshman Tim Conway (Bedford, N.H./West) combined on the pitching effort for the Panthers. Bradbury allowed four hits and two runs in four innings to collect the win, while Conway worked three scoreless innings to record his first save.
Plymouth State, 7-28 overall, plays a non-conference single game Thursday at Daniel Webster College (2:00 p.m.). Castleton State completes the season with a 21-19 record.
