PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University basketball players were recognized by the Little East Conference Monday after their performances in PSU’s opening weekend of the season.
Freshman Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass./Williston Northampton) was named LEC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week after a standout weekend in the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by PSU. Senior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) was named to the LEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll after earning Most Valuable Player honors in the Men’s Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by PSU.
A 5’8” forward, Gray averaged 9.5 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds in two games, while also contributing three assists and two steals. She finished with 11 points and nine boards in her collegiate debut last Saturday against Norwich, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, and added eight points and five rebounds in Sunday’s win over Simmons. She helped the Panthers win the consolation game over Simmons, 94-84, after suffering a 79-64 loss to Norwich in the opening round.
A 6’4” forward, Walcek averaged 13.5 points and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds in two games, while also contributing seven assists. He connected on 7-of-9 shot attempts from three-point range. Walcek had a double-double in PSU’s opener with 19 points and 11 boards as PSU outlasted Centenary, 82-67, and he added eight points, six rebounds and four assists in the title game win over Wheaton.
Both Panthers teams play a non-conference game Tuesday at Castleton State (women at 5:30 p.m., men at 7:30 p.m.)
