WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women’s basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover Tuesday afternoon, and fell to Clark University, 74-59, in the consolation game of the Williams Winter Classic.
Sophomore Ashley Auclair (Williamsburg, Mass.) led the Cougars with a 21-point, 13-rebound effort. Junior Andrea Comen (Holden, Mass.) added 16 points and six assists, and senior Abby Pineo (Gardner, Mass.) contributed 15 points for the winners.
Freshman Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) (pictured) was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading Plymouth State with 14 points. Senior Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) added 11 points in the losing cause.
PSU, which was defeated by Williams in Monday’s tourney opener, 88-40, falls to 3-6 on the season, while Clark improves to 6-4.
Auclair and Pineo helped Clark to a strong start against the Panthers. Auclair scored six points and Pineo five as the Cougars took a 20-4 lead just eight minutes into the game. Clark stretched its lead to 20 points midway through the half before ending up with a 13-point advantage (42-29) at the break.
PSU battled back to cut the margin to six points (58-52) with seven minutes remaining, but Clark scored nine straight points and cruised home the rest of the way.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference action this Saturday, hosting Eastern Connecticut at Foley Gymnasium (1:00 p.m.). ECSU posted a 101-18 record the past four seasons, but lost three starters from last year, including four-time All-America Allison Coleman.
