NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) scored the game-winning goal six minutes, 43 seconds into overtime Sunday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 3-2 victory over Lasell College in a non-conference field hockey game.
The Panthers had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half on a pair of goals by senior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), her second and third goals of the season. Lasell battled back and cut the margin in half with 1:39 remaining in the first half on a goal by Rachael Johnson (Litchfield, Conn.)
The Lasers put up the only goal of the second half as Jackie Motyl (Chicopee, Mass.) tied the game with 24 minutes to play in regulation. Lasell had a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second half, but the teams went to overtime deadlocked at 2-2, setting up Bates’ game-winner.
Lasell finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots. Junior Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) made 16 saves, includes 10 in the second half, to earn the win, and Lasell’s Laura Gallagher (Westford, Mass.) made 12 saves.
PSU, 2-1 overall, returns to action next Saturday with a key Little East Conference home game against Westfield State (12:00 p.m.)
