DANBURY, Conn. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team cruised to its fourth straight victory Saturday morning, defeating Western Connecticut State University, 7-1, in Little East Conference action at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Panthers, now 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, took a 1-0 advantage when junior Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) netted her third goal of the season in the 13th minute of play. Senior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season for PSU two minutes later and the Panthers never looked back. Silva would go on to score her 12th goal with just over five minutes remaining in the contest.
Sophomores Jenna Lace (Pascoag, R.I.) and Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H.), freshman Amanda Sherburne (Rumney, N.H.), and junior Heather Corrigan (West Hartford, Conn.) each added a goal for the winners.
WestConn got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute when Racheal Bolmer (Brookfield, Conn.) scored her second goal of the season. The Colonials are in their first year as a varsity sport.
Sophomore goalie Leah Curtin (Londonderry, NH) did not have to make a save for the Panthers as they held a 26-1 shot advantage in the game. Junior Ashley Quinn (Brewster, NY) made 11 saves for the Colonials, now 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the LEC.
Plymouth State plays its next three games at home, beginning Tuesday with an LEC match-up against Worcester State (4:00 p.m.) WestConn travels to Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.)
