PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal with 8:36 remaining Saturday afternoon at Arold Field to lift Plymouth State University past Thomas College in the college field hockey opener for both schools.
Plymouth State outshot Thomas 29-1 but had to come from behind to pull out the victory. The Terriers got on the board first when senior Molly Tibbetts (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) scored with an assist from junior Ashley Gibson (Enfield, N.H.). The goal came with 1:44 to play in the first half and gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Panthers evened the score five minutes into the second half when junior Laurie Allinson (Berwick, Maine) converted a penalty stroke. It was still tied 1-1 when PSU junior Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) passed to Kovacs near the right goal mouth, and Kovacs finished off the play for the eventual game-winner.
Thomas goalie Jen Lane (Fairfield, Maine) had a solid game in net, making 12 saves. PSU sophomore goalie Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) did not have to make any stops.
PSU, 1-0, is home again on Wednesday to host Castleton State at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.) The next game for Thomas, 0-1, is the home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 14, against UMaine Farmington.
