PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Adrienne LeClair (Boxford, Mass.) scored a goal with 2:18 remaining in the first overtime Saturday afternoon, lifting Colby College past Plymouth State University 2-1 in a non-conference field hockey game at Arold Field, the season opener for both schools.
Colby begins the season at 1-0 and defeats Plymouth State for the second year in a row. The Mules edged the Panthers last season, handing PSU its only loss of the 2002 regular season.
It was a close game throughout, with both team enjoying several opportunities. After a scoreless first half, Colby got on the board first midway through the second half when junior Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) converted a penalty stroke. PSU got the equalizer five minutes later, with sophomore Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) converting a Panther fast break and tying the score at 1-1.
Both teams had chances in overtime, when they were playing seven-on-seven. Colby ended the affair when Bonner fed LeClair with a centering pass and LeClair knocked in the game-winner.
Freshman Molly Rice (South Portland, Maine) made seven saves in the win for Colby, while PSU senior Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) registered 10 saves in the Panther net.
PSU, 0-1, returns to action next Saturday with a non-conference contest at Springfield (1:00 p.m.). Colby plays again Wednesday at Husson (4:30 p.m.).
