PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) and junior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) scored two goals apiece Sunday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University’s field hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Bates College in a non-conference game at Arold Field.
Plymouth State took a 4-1 lead in the first half, but had to hold off the upset-minded Bobcats in the second half. PSU improves to 4-1 overall while Bates heads home with a 1-2 mark.
Farias and Silva scored a minute apart 11 minutes into the game to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Liz Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) put Bates on the board with the first of her two goals in the game at the 16:26 mark, but the Panthers closed out the first-half scoring with consecutive goals by senior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) and Farias, with an assist from junior Mel Dixon (Mattapoisett, Mass.).
Greenwood tallied her second goal for Bates in the opening minutes of the second half, and sophomore Carolyn King (Hanover, Mass.) brought the Bobcats to within a goal with 21 minutes remaining. Silva’s second score, which was set up by junior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.), gave PSU its two-goal lead back with 14 minutes to play.
Freshman Caitlin Tamposi (Temple, N.H.) scored for Bates with 11:43 on the clock, with an assist from local product Brooke Anable (Plymouth, N.H.), but the Bobcats could get no closer.
