PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A freshman forward on the Plymouth State University field hockey team was recognized by the Little East Conference Monday after leading the Panthers to a pair of key conference victories last week.
Freshman Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.) was named Little East Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. She helped the Panthers to a pair of victories over Fitchburg State and Eastern Connecticut last week that put PSU in line for an LEC post-season berth.
A first-year forward, Smith (left) finished the week with seven points on three goals and one assist. She scored the first two goals of the game Wednesday, including the eventual game-winner, in PSU’s 3-1 win over Fitchburg State, and added a goal and an assist in Saturday’s 6-0 victory over Eastern Conn. Smith is now fourth on the team in scoring with four goals and one assist.
The two wins move the Panthers into eighth place in the conference and in the driver’s seat for the eighth and final LEC playoff berth.
Plymouth State, 6-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play, wraps up the regular season with two games this week – a non-conference encounter Tuesday at home against Springfield (3:00 p.m.) and a Little East game Saturday at Framingham State (2:00 p.m.) The LEC Tournament begins next Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the sites of the top four seeds.
