PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team will make its fifth consecutive post-season appearance, and 10th in the last 12 years, this week as the top seed in the ECAC New England Tournament.
The Panthers (15-4) will host eighth-seeded Worcester State College (11-7) in a first-round game this Wednesday (Nov. 10) at 2:00 p.m. at Arold Field. As the top seed, PSU will continue to play at home as long as it remains alive in the tournament.
The other first round games are #7 Simmons College (12-6) at #2 Wellesley College (12-5), #6 Clark University (12-6) visiting #3 Endicott (14-7), and #5 Western New England College (14-8) at #4 Babson College (13-8). The semifinals and finals are Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-14, with the higher seeded teams hosting each game.
Plymouth State, led by fifth-year head coach Bonnie Lord, received the ECAC berth after finishing runner-up in the Little East Conference during the regular season and in the post-season tournament. PSU finished 8-2 during the regular season and advanced to the championship game last weekend before falling to Keene State, 2-0.
The Panthers were the fourth seed in last year’s ECAC Tournament and were upset by fifth-seeded Clark in the first round, 3-1. PSU advanced to the NCAA National Tournament the three previous years (2000-02) after winning Little East Conference titles.
Worcester State claimed the eighth seed in the tournament after getting knocked out of the Little East Tournament semifinals by Plymouth State, 3-2. The Lancers finished in a tie for fourth during the regular season with a 6-4 mark. WSC also fell at Plymouth State during the regular season (Oct. 23), 3-0.
PSU is also making its 10th ECAC appearance. The Panthers’ previous selections came in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2003. Plymouth State’s only ECAC championship occurred in 1987.
