WATERVILLE, Maine — Senior Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) and junior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) scored two goals apiece Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University field hockey team to a 7-1 triumph over Thomas College in the season opener for both schools.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead by halftime before cruising home with the win. Gutowski added one assist to her two goals, and sophomore Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) contributed three assists in the winning effort for the Panthers.
PSU also got one goal apiece from juniors Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) and Mel Dixon (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and freshman Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H.). The Panthers finished with a 31-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman goalie Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned the victory in net in her collegiate debut, making four saves. Thomas senior Meredith Arute (Jackson, Maine) broke the shutout with a goal for the Terriers with 10:44 remaining in the contest.
PSU, 1-0, plays another road game Wednesday at Castleton State (4:00 p.m.) before the home opener next Saturday against Springfield (12:30 p.m.). Thomas is back in action on Sept. 13 at Colby College.
