PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) scored his second goal of the game 52 seconds into overtime Friday night, giving Plymouth State University a 3-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University in ECAC Northeast Conference hockey action.
The victory stops a five-game losing skid for the Panthers and improves them to 7-10-0 overall and 3-7-0 in league play. JWU dropped its 10th in a row and fell to 1-19-1 and 1-10-1. PSU will remain in Rhode Island and play Salve Regina on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) while Johnson & Wales is off until next Wednesday.
Kane scored his first goal just 12 seconds into the game, with an assist from senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.), only to see JWU come back to tie it 24 seconds later on a goal by Eric Robertson.
After the opening-minute flurry, the only goal over the next 53 minutes was a score by PSU junior Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) midway through the second period, his seventh of the season. JWU’s Matt O’Connor evened the contest at 2-2 with a power play goal with 6:06 remaining in the third period, setting the stage for overtime.
It took less than a minute into the extra frame for Kane to score his second of the game and team-leading 12th of the season, with Jackson and sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) picking up assists.
Both goaltenders had busy nights, with the Panthers outshooting the Wildcats, 49-41. PSU freshman Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) earned the victory with a 39-save effort, while JWU’s Sean Hershman turned away a whopping 46 shots.
The outcome was the 16th time in 17 PSU outings this season that the margin of victory was either one or two goals. The Panthers are 4-5-0 in one-goal games, and 3-4-0 in two-goal contests, with three of those losses one-goal affairs with an empty-netter.
