WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) scored two goals for the second consecutive night Saturday at Waterville Valley Ice Arena, leading Plymouth State University’s hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Fredonia State and a two-game sweep of the weekend series against schools from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
The Panthers, who also claimed a 4-3 decision Friday night over Buffalo State, extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 4-5-0 overall. Fredonia, which had picked up a 4-1 victory at Framingham State Friday for its third straight win, avoided a shutout with a goal with 31 seconds remaining, but dropped to 9-5-1 overall.
PSU tallied a pair of special teams goals in the first seven minutes of the game off starting goaltender David Beckles (Stamford, Conn.), sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) scoring a short-handed marker at 2:57 and Jackson collecting a power play goal at 6:38. The score remained that way (2-0) until late in the third period as Blue Devil reserve goalie Simon Maignan (Pully, Switz.) and PSU netminder Michael Mansson (Wilson, Wyo.) didn’t surrender a goal for the next 50 minutes.
Jackson added an insurance goal for PSU, his second of the night, fourth in two games and seventh of the season, with an unassisted effort with 3:17 remaining in the third. With the teams skating four-a-side in the closing seconds, Fredonia pulled its goalie and broke the shutout on freshman Kraig Kuzma’s (Muskegon, Mich.) sixth goal of the season.
Mansson held down the fort as the clock wound down, finishing with 32 saves. Maignan stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced in 52 minutes.
Plymouth State continues its four-game homestand with games next Thursday and Saturday at Waterville Valley Ice Arena against Nichols and Neumann, respectively (both games at 6:00 p.m.). Fredonia State returns home to host RIT and Utica next Friday and Saturday (both games at 7:00 p.m.).
