WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) scored a pair of third-period goals Friday night, including the game-winner with 11 minutes remaining, leading Plymouth State University’s hockey team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Buffalo State College at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
With both teams making their first appearance since early December, the Panthers improved to 3-5-0 overall, while the visiting Bengals dropped to 2-12-0.
It was a one-goal hockey game the entire way. Junior Josh Magnuson (Chisago, Minn.) scored first for Buff.State, connecting on a short-handed goal 8:29 into the game, but PSU junior Michal Bodnar (Olomouc, Czech Rep.) tied things up a little over a minute later with his third of the season.
The Bengals took the lead again at the 14:08 mark of the second on a goal by junior Morgan McElman (Bayside, N.B.), but the Panthers tied it again on freshman Mykul Haun’s (Alameda, Cal.) marker with 48 seconds left in the middle frame.
Jackson gave PSU its first lead of the night a minute into the third period, but BSC answered less than two minutes later when sophomore Nick DeMarco (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) knotted the score at 3-3. Jackson had the final answer, though, slipping an unassisted power play goal into the net at the 8:42 mark, and neither team could score the rest of the way. Jackson’s two goals give him five for the season.
PSU sophomore goalie Kyle VanDingstee (Skaneateles, N.Y.) picked up the victory with a 25-save effort. Freshman Sean Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) made 27 saves in his collegiate debut for the Bengals but was saddled with the loss.
Plymouth State is home again Saturday evening (6:00 p.m.), hosting Fredonia State in another non-conference tilt at Waterville Valley Ice Arena. Buffalo State plays Saturday at Framingham State (7:40 p.m.) before returning to western New York.
