WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman goalie Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced Thursday night, leading Plymouth State University’s ice hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Nichols College at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The win was PSU’s fourth in a row, matching the longest winning streak in nearly five years, and evens the Panthers’ overall record at 5-5-0. Nichols dropped its second straight to fall to 3-9-0. PSU last won four in a row in January and February of 1999.
Nichols finished with a 37-27 advantage in shots on goal, but Cherry held the Bison at bay to improve his season record to 2-1. He made at least 10 saves in all three periods, and kept Nichols off the board on 10 power play attempts.
Plymouth State scored the only goal of the opening period, as senior Matt Toutain (Lewiston, Maine) potted his first goal of the season at 16:27. The Panthers extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of second-period scores, with sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) connecting at 9:03 and classmate and linemate Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) adding another at 15:47, the sixth of the season for both.
Nichols finally got on the board nine minutes into the third period when freshman Mike Wright (Marshfield, Mass.) scored his first career goal. But Cherry did the job the rest of the way, and PSU skated away with the win.
Freshman Ryan Davis (Sandpinte, Mich.) made 15 saves for Nichols in the first two periods, and junior Nick Reaume (Lakeland, Fla.) came on to stop 13 nine shots in the third.
Plymouth State wraps up a four-game homestand Saturday at Waterville Valley Ice Arena against Neumann College (Pa.), beginning at 6:00 p.m. Nichols returns home to begin a five-game homestand Saturday against Worcester State (7:30 p.m.).
