WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Juniors Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) and Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) combined to set up three goals Tuesday evening at Waterville Valley Ice Arena, lifting the Plymouth State University men’s hockey team to its first win of the season, a 5-2 non-conference decision over Castleton State College.
Five different players scored goals for the Panthers, and the Kane-Nickerson combination set up three of them. Freshman Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) and senior Michal Bodnar (Olomouc, Czech Rep.) set up the other two as the Panthers improved to 1-2-1 overall and CSC dropped to 0-3-0.
Sophomore Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the only goal of the first period to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Sophomore Joe Zeitler (Glens Falls, N.Y.) evened the game for the Spartans with an unassisted goal at 10:45 of the second period, but PSU answered 12 seconds later, taking the lead for good on a goal by junior Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.). Freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) added another for PSU to make it 3-1 at the end of the middle frame.
Junior Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.) extended PSU’s lead 26 seconds into the third period, and classmate Matt Withers (Laconia, N.H.) added his team-leading fourth goal six minutes later.
Freshman Joe McIntyre (Sharon, Vt.) rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with a goal in the final minute.
PSU had a 36-19 advantage in shots on goal. PSU sophomore Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) made 17 saves to post the win, and CSC sophomore Branden Gallagher (Hauppauge, N.Y.) stopped 31 shots.
Plymouth State returns to action this weekend (Nov. 27-28) at the PAL Stovepipe Tournament in Hooksett, N.H. The Panthers will meet Southern New Hampshire University Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with the consolation and championship game set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
