FITCHBURG, Mass. – Senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) became the sixth men’s ice hockey player in school history to record 100 career points Saturday evening as Plymouth State University defeated Fitchburg State College, 5-2, in an ECAC Northeast Conference game.
Kane (left) scored the first goal of the game at the 7:59 mark, his 12th of the season and giving him 53 goals and 47 assists for his career. His 53 goals also ranks tied for third on PSU’s career list (tied with Matt Hanyak, who scored 53 from 1990-93).
Kane helped the Panthers improve to 12-8-1 overall and 10-2-0 in the Northeast, which is sole possession of third place. Junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) and sophomores Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) and Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) also collected a goal and an assist apiece against the Falcons, who drop to 12-10-1 overall and 7-7 in conference play, which is tied for seventh.
Sophomore Ryan Moreau (Worcester, Mass.) followed Kane’s goal with his fifth of the season to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead after one period. Fitchburg State came back to tally consecutive goals by junior Mike Dryer (Rockland, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Goulet (Blackstone, Mass.) to tie the game at 2-2 at the 10:23 mark of the second frame.
Just 28 seconds after the Falcons tied it, though, Goose LaCroix gave the Panthers the lead back with his team-leading 15th of the season, and what turned out to be the game-winner. Cadieux added a power play goal six minutes into the third period, and Topo LaCroix sealed the win with an empty net goal with 1:07 remaining.
Fitchburg State had a narrow 37-36 advantage in the shots on goal department. PSU sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) earned the victory in goal with 35 saves. Sophomore Devan McConnell (Lake Stevens, Wash.) turned away 31 shots for the Falcons.
Kane is the first PSU 100-point scorer since Eric Ryan finished with 105 points from 1996-2000. The others to reach the milestone include Kevin Craig (186 points from 1984-88), Duncan Walsh (137 from 1982-86), Jeff Craig (113 points from 1993-97), and David Converse (105 from 1990-93).
