PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The starting goaltender on the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team continues to shine and was honored by the ECAC Northeast Conference Wednesday for his performance in two Panther games last week.
Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was named ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 30. He has also been named ECAC Northeast Goalie of the Week three times this season.
A 6’2”, 170-pound goalie, Helgesson posted a 1-1 record in two games, stopping 79 of the 81 shots he faced (97.5 percent) and recording a 1.01 goals against average. He made 36 saves on 37 shots in PSU’s 3-1 win last Tuesday at Framingham State, and he made a season-high 43 saves on 44 shots Saturday as PSU gave first-place Wentworth all it could handle in a 1-0 loss to the Leopards.
Helgesson is now ranked second among the 21 goalies in the ECAC Northeast in saves percentage (.908) and fourth in goals against average (2.94).
PSU, 6-8-2 overall this season and 3-4-1 in conference play, plays its next two games at home – Saturday against Johnson & Wales and next Wednesday (Feb. 9) vs. Suffolk. Both games begin at 6:00 p.m. at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
