PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The freshman goaltender on the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team was recognized Tuesday by the ECAC Northeast Conference for his performance in two Panther games last week.
Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was named ECAC Northeast Goalie of the Week, the third time this season he has earned the honor. He registered a pair of wins, leading PSU to road victories over Stonehill College and Suffolk University.
A 6’2”, 170-pound goalie, Helgesson posted a 2-0 record on the week with a 3.50 goals against average and a .843 saves percentage. He stopped 20 of 22 shots to lead PSU to a 4-2 conference win over Stonehill, and he made 17 saves in the non-conference decision over Suffolk. Three of the five goals he allowed to Suffolk came on Rams’ power plays.
Helgesson is now ranked second among the 22 goalies in the ECAC Northeast in both goals against average (2.75) and saves percentage (.909).
PSU, 5-5-2 overall this season and 2-1-1 in conference play, returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 19) with a conference match-up at Southern New Hampshire University (6:00 p.m.)
