PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The standout starting goalie on the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team has been honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference for his performance in PSU’s season opener last Saturday.
Sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was selected ECAC Northeast Goalie of the Week for the first week of the 2005-06 season. He has picked up from where he left off last season, when he was named either Goalie of the Week or Rookie of the Week five times, and was named Second Team All-ECAC Northeast in voting by both the coaches and the New England hockey writers.
A 6’2”, 170-pound goalie, Helgesson (left) recorded a career-high 49 saves last Saturday in a 6-2 loss to Nichols in PSU’s season opener. Helgesson kept the Panthers in the game, making 18 saves in the first period, 14 in the second and 17 in the third. He was named the No. 2 star in the loss. Helgesson came back two nights later to make 38 saves against Stonehill to earn his first career shutout.
The Panthers, 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast, play seven of their next eight games away from home, beginning this Saturday with a Northeast Conference encounter at UMass Dartmouth (4:30 p.m.)
