ORLANDO, Fla. – Junior goalie Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 18 saves and recorded his first career shutout Tuesday evening as the Plymouth State University men’s lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 14-0 victory over New England College in a non-conference contest played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
PSU led 4-0 after the first quarter and 6-0 at halftime before adding four goals in each of the third and fourth quarters to cruise to the win. Both teams are now 1-2 on the season.
Key defenders for the Panthers helping Valeri post the whitewash were juniors Tim Vasconcellos (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Tim Butler (Concord, Mass.), sophomores Guy Faretra (Westford, Mass.) and Mike Russell ((Concord, N.H.), and freshman Jordan Ruggeri (Milford, Conn.)
Seniors Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) paced the Panther offense with three goals apiece. Seniors Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) added two goals apiece, with Dabrieo adding three assists and Krinsky two helpers. Freshmen Luke Metraw (Chelmsford, Mass.) and DJ Butler (Brookline, N.H.) both scored their first career goals for the Panthers.
Both teams play one more game on Thursday on their respective Florida trips. PSU faces Union College in Tampa at 1:30 p.m., and NEC meets Saint Lawrence in Orlando at 3:00 p.m.
