MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) scored his first goal of the game a minute, 58 seconds into sudden death overtime Thursday afternoon to give Plymouth State University’s men’s lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over the University of Scranton (Pa.)
The game was close the entire way, as the Panthers led 3-1 after the first period and 5-3 at halftime. The Royals cut the margin to 5-4 in the third quarter, and forced the extra frame by tying the game up in the fourth. The win is PSU’s second straight on its spring break trip, evening the Panthers’ record at 2-2 overall. Scranton drops to 0-5 on the season.
Juniors Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) led the PSU offense with three goals apiece, with Dabrieo also registering an assist. Junior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) also collected assists for the Panthers.
Junior Todd Cuccia (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the Royals with three goals and two assists, while sophomore Sean O’Connor (Media, Pa.) contributed a goal and two assists. Junior Matt Cesare (Branchburg, N.J.) and freshman Santiago DelCastillo (Port Washington, N.Y.) also scored for Scranton.
Sophomore Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) played a strong game in the Panther goal, making 14 saves. Senior Thomas Kenyon (Chittenango, N.Y.) made seven saves for Scranton.
PSU is scheduled to return to action next Tuesday, Mar. 29, at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. (4:00 p.m.)
