PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University used a balanced offensive attack Thursday evening, and defeated Daniel Webster College, 16-4, in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at Panther Field.
Junior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) tallied three goals and one assist apiece to lead the Panthers, while junior Pat O’Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) also scored three goals as PSU pulled back to the .500 mark at 5-5 overall. Daniel Webster dropped its fifth straight and fell to 1-11.
The Panthers scored the first four goals of the game, but Daniel Webster came back with a pair to make it a 4-2 game at the end of the first quarter. PSU rattled off six unanswered goals in the second period, including two each from Gagnon and O’Malley, to give the hosts a 10-2 halftime advantage.
The visitors stayed close, scoring the only goal of the third quarter, but PSU put the game away by outscoring the Eagles 6-1 in the final frame.
In addition to the top three scorers, PSU got singles goals from junior John Gallagher (Forestdale, Mass.), sophomores Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and Jared Siegel (Ledyard, Conn.), and freshmen Drew Gobiel (Chelmsford, Mass.), Nick Pearson (Peterborough, N.H.), Eric Oliver (Winchester, Mass.) and Tim Vasconcellos (East Falmouth, Mass.).
The Eagles were led by junior Matt Pietrowski (Edgewood, Md.) and senior Joe LaVeglia (Medford Lakes, N.J.), who scored two goals apiece.
Junior goalie Gabe Berthiaume (Charlton, Mass.) was solid in the Eagles net, making 22 saves, while the three Panther goalies – freshman Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.), sophomore Michael Rodrick(Plaistow, N.H.) and senior Tim McNamara (West Lebanon, N.H.) combined for nine stops.
Plymouth State wraps up the regular season Saturday with a key Little East Conference home game vs. UMass Dartmouth (2:00 p.m.). Daniel Webster plays again Saturday at Johnson State (2:00 p.m.).
