PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University scored five unanswered goals in the third period Wednesday night and then held off New England College in the fourth quarter to defeat the Pilgrims, 10-6, in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at Panther Field.
PSU led 2-0 after one quarter and 5-1 late in the second before the visitors scored twice in the final 10 seconds of the half to make it 5-3 at intermission. The Panthers pulled away in the third period to go up 10-3, but the Pilgrims made things interesting with three fourth-quarter goals.
The Panthers won their third straight contest to pull closer to the .500 mark at 5-6 overall, while NEC drops to 6-6.
Plymouth State used a balanced scoring attack for the win. Junior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Pearson (Peterborough, N.H.) scored two goals apiece, and freshman Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) and senior Pat O’Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) contributed a goal and an assist each. Freshman John Cogswell (Jefferson, Mass.), sophomore Tim Vasconcellos (East Falmouth, Mass.), junior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) all collected one goal, and junior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) chipped in with two assists.
Senior Steven Thierfield (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Pilgrims with two goals and one assist. Classmates Michael MacVane (South Portland, Maine) and Eric Anderson (Portland, Maine) added a goal and an assist apiece, and sophomore Ryan Herzog (Hampstead, N.H.) and senior Nick Mayo (Marshfield, Mass.) contributed one goal each.
Sophomore Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win in the Panther goal with 12 saves, while senior Tyler Prudden (Andover, Mass.) made seven saves for the Pilgrims.
PSU wraps up the regular season this weekend with two Little East Conference home games – Saturday against UMass Dartmouth and Sunday vs. Southern Maine, both games at 1:00 p.m. NEC returns home to host Roger Williams Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in its regular season finale.
