NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) recorded his fifth shutout of the season Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University’s men’s soccer team blanked the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-0, in the Little East Conference regular-season finale for both schools.
Plymouth State got an early goal from sophomore Matt Verrecchia (South Kingstown, R.I.) and then held off the Corsairs with two insurance goals in the last five minutes. PSU wraps up the regular season at 11-3-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference, while UMD concludes its season at 4-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in LEC games.
PSU and Western Connecticut end up in a tie for third place in the LEC. The Panthers will be the third seed in next week’s LEC Tournament (based on a head-to-head win over WestConn two weeks ago) and will travel for second-seeded Rhode Island College for a semifinal contest on Wednesday. WestConn will visit top-seeded and defending champion Keene State Wednesday for the other semifinal.
Verrecchia converted a pass from senior Chris Catatao (Burlington, Mass.) for the first goal of the match at the 12:50 mark. That goal stood until Catatao volleyed home a pass from freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) with 4:16 remaining in the second half, and sophomore Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan) added another goal on a shot from close range with 1:40 remaining, with junior Dustin Moya (Thornton, Col.) assisting on the play.
PSU out shot the Corsairs, 13-5, but UMD had 10 corner kicks to the Panthers’ three. UMass Dartmouth sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Fossey (Townsend, Mass.) made seven saves, while Shute was credited with three saves for PSU.
