BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) tallied the game-winning goal and added an assist Sunday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over Bridgewater State College at BSC’s Swenson Field.
The Panthers, winners of four straight games, remain undefeated on the year with a record of 5-0-1. Bridgewater State falls to 1-3 on the young season.
Seniors Steve Balgach (Fairfield, Conn.) and Chris Catatao (Burlington, Mass.) also scored for the Panthers. Balgach converted on a penalty shot in the game’s 53rd minute to break a scoreless tie. Catatao sealed the victory for the Panthers in the 86th minute as he rounded out the scoring.
Bridgewater State senior Ian Melton (San Antonio, Texas) scored the Bears’ lone goal of the game as he knocked home a corner kick from freshman Ryan Morrison (Weymouth, Mass.). Melton’s goal at the time cut the lead to 2-1. Minutes later junior forward Josh Naginewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) blasted a shot off the crossbar that would have evened the score.
Sophomore Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) collected his fifth win of the season as he turned aside four shots in goal for the Panthers. BSC junior John Naughton (Braintree, Mass.) took the loss for the Bears despite making six saves on the afternoon.
Plymouth State heads to Endicott College on Wednesday night to take on the Gulls at 7:00 p.m. Bridgewater State returns to the field on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 against Eastern Connecticut.
