BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Brad Wyman (Durham, N.H.) netted a pair of goals in his first appearance of the season Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team over the University of Massachusetts Boston, 4-1, in the Little East Conference season opener at the Clark Athletic Center.
Wyman, who missed PSU’s first four games recovering from an injury, tallied a pair of second-half goals to lead the Panthers. PSU is now 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Beacons fall to 4-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the LEC.
Plymouth State got on the board at the 19:46 mark of the first half when junior Dustin Moya (Thornton, Col.) found senior Chris Catatao (Burlington, Mass.), who took advantage of UMass Boston’s keeper coming out of the net, and scored for a 1-0 edge. Sophomore Matt Verrecchia (South Kingstown, R.I.) later lofted a cross down the middle of the field to a streaking sophomore Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan/Tilton Prep (N.H.), who lifted a shot just over the reach of the Beacons’ goalie for a Panthers’ 2-0 lead at 24:29 of the first half.
Wyman gave Plymouth State a 3-0 advantage when he converted a cross from sophomore Jamal Luttamaguzi (Stockholm, Sweden) just 3:31 into the second half, but UMB sophomore Romeo Zeqo (Malden, Mass.) fed freshman forward Henry Marin (Haverhill, Mass.) for a score in front of the net just 39 seconds later for UMass Boston’s only goal of the day.
Wyman capped the afternoon’s scoring when he scored on freshman Semir Mehmedovic’s (Franklin, N.H.) centering cross on a corner kick at 73:34 of the second half.
UMB freshman goalkeeper Paul Maniscalco (Boston, MA) stopped seven shots for the Beacons, while Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) turned away six shots to earn the victory for the Panthers.
PSU plays a make-up game Saturday at Bridgewater State (1:00 p.m.), while UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday when it hosts Mass. Maritime at 3:30 p.m.
