PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University scored three second-half goals Saturday afternoon and proved to be too much for the University of Massachusetts Boston, as the Panthers downed the Beacons, 3-0, in a Little East Conference men’s soccer match at Panther Field.
The Panthers remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0-1 overall, earning their first shutout of the campaign, while UMB drops to 3-2-0 overall. It was the first LEC game for both teams.
The visitors ended the first half with a 5-4 advantage in shots, but it was 0-0 on the scoreboard. PSU turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Beacons 8-5 after the break and scoring all three goals.
PSU got on the board eight minutes into the second half when sophomore George Delano (Kingston, N.H.) made an outstanding individual play, weaving through several UMB defenders before deking the goalie and depositing his first goal of the year into the net. Junior Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H.) made it 2-0 with 18 minutes remaining with his team-leading fourth goal of the year, and senior Felix Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) finished off the scoring with five minutes to go, knocking in his first goal of the season off a nice cross by junior Alex Marin (Manchester, N.H./Memorial).
PSU sophomore keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) earned his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career with a five-save effort. UMB sophomore Paul Maniscalo (Hanover, Mass.) finished with four saves as PSU outshot the Beacons, 12-10.
The Panthers are right back into action Sunday with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Panther Field against Middlebury (3:00 p.m.) The Beacons return to play Tuesday when they travel to Mass. Maritime for a 3:30 p.m. game.
