WENHAM, Mass. – Junior Koichi Nakatsubo (Numazo City, Japan/Franklin N.H. High School) scored the game-winning goal midway through the second overtime Wednesday afternoon, lifting the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team to a rainy 2-1 non-conference victory over Gordon College.
Each team scored once in the first half of play. Gordon freshman David McMullen (Silver Lake, Ohio) put the hosts on the board first with 16 minutes to go in the half, and PSU junior Dustin Moya (Thornton, Col.) evened the match with just 14 seconds remaining on the first-half clock with his first goal of the season.
Plymouth State had a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team was able to score again until Nakatsubo finished off an unassisted goal with 8:50 remaining in the second overtime.
Senior Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) made just one save to earn the win in the Panther net, while junior Pete Hassler (Westford, Vt.) made nine saves for the Fighting Scots.
PSU, 2-0-0, returns home to host Salem State Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Gordon, 1-2-0, hosts Eastern Nazarene College Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener.
