PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) broke a scoreless deadlock three minutes into the second half Thursday evening to propel Plymouth State University over the upset-minded Bears of Bridgewater State College, 2-0, in a non-conference men’s soccer contest at Panther Field.
Both teams came out firing in the first half, with the Panthers hitting the crossbar off a corner just four minutes into the contest. The play moved back and forth for the remainder of the half but neither team was able to score.
Rodriguez gave the hosts just what they needed, a quick goal just three minutes into the second half, assisted by Peter Balslev (Charlottenlund, Denmark). Less than 10 minutes later, freshman Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) scored for PSU on a throw in from Brad Wyman (Durham, N.H.). PSU kept applying heavy amounts of pressure but couldn’t push another one in, outshooting the Bears 10-3 in the second half and 13-6 for the game.
Senior Jayson Smith (Northwood, N.H.) made just one save in the Panther net to register his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his career. Sophomore John Naughton (Braintree, Mass.) made four saves for the Bears.
PSU, 4-1-0 and ranked eighth in New England, opens Little East Conference play Saturday at home against UMass Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.). Bridgewater State, 1-2-0, looks to bounce back, visiting UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
