PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Adam Gove (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional) scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute Wednesday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University past Bates College, 1-0, in non-conference men’s soccer action at Panther Field.
Plymouth State stops its two-game losing streak and improves to 9-3-1 overall, while Bates drops to the .500 mark at 5-5-1. PSU had lost its two previous games by scores of 5-0, while Bates was coming off a big 3-3 tie against Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 7 in the country.
The visitors had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. Gove broke through the scoreless deadlock with just under 13 minutes remaining in the second half, making a nice individual move around the Bobcat defense and bending his shot around Bates goalie Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) for the eventual game-winner. It was Gove’s first goal of the season.
PSU finished with a 6-4 advantage in shots in the second half, but Bates ended up with a narrow 9-8 margin for the game. PSU sophomore keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) made two saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
Both teams return to conference action on Saturday. Plymouth State visits Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College, while Bates travels to Middlebury for a NESCAC match-up.
