FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Junior Rob Harvey (Lakeville, Mass.) scored his first hat trick of the season Tuesday afternoon to lift the Framingham State College men’s soccer team to 4-1 non-conference win over Plymouth State University on the Maple Street Field.
The Panthers suffered their fourth loss in the last five games and fell to 9-5-1 overall, while the Rams won their third in a row and improved to 11-4-1.
Plymouth State took an early 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as freshman Drew McSpiritt (Londonderry, N.H.) found sophomore Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.), who fired a shot into the back of the net past the Rams’ diving goalie. PSU maintained its lead until the 38th minute when FSC freshman Rob O’Doherty (Northboro, Mass.) found Harvey with a perfect cross that Harvey knocked home to tie the score at 1-1 at halftime.
The Rams took control of the game in the second half as Harvey scored the game-winner and his second of the day in the 65th minute, knocking home a cross from sophomore Johnny Goncalves (Framingham, Mass.). Harvey converted a penalty kick two minutes later to complete the hat trick and give the Rams a 3-1 lead. Goncalves finished off the scoring for the Rams in the 87th minute with a goal off a direct kick from just outside the box.
Junior Eddie Palomba (Saugus, Mass.) made 10 saves in net for the Rams and combined with freshman Greg Halle (Beverly, Mass.) to pick up the win. PSU goalies Nick Giusto (West Islip, N.Y.) and Joey Burrows (Amherst, N.H.) combined to make five saves.
PSU wraps up the regular season this Saturday with a key Little East Conference match at Panther Field against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) The seeds for the LEC Tournament, which begins next Wednesday, will be finalized after Saturday’s games. The Rams travel to Bridgewater State Saturday for an 11:00 game to close out their regular season.
