PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Steve Balgach (Fairfield, Conn.) had a goal and an assist Wednesday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 2-1 overtime victory over Green Mountain College in a non-conference men’s soccer contest at Panther Field.
With his team trailing by a goal, Balgach drilled a corner kick into the box with 10 minutes left in regulation. The ball curled towards the goal, went off the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net to tie the game at 1-1, sending the game into overtime.
Balgach then got off a shot eight minutes into the extra session, and freshman Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan) knocked in the rebound to give PSU the victory. It was Tanikawa’s second straight game-winning goal; he scored the only goal in last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southern Maine.
Green Mountain had taken a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when sophomore Christopher Nevitt (Avalon, N.J.) broke free on a breakaway and got one past PSU goalkeeper Jayson Smith (Northwood, N.H.).
The hosts finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots. PSU improved to 8-5-1 overall, while Green Mountain drops to 5-9-0 overall. It was also PSU’s seventh overtime game this season (4-2-1).
Smith and classmate Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) combined to make three saves in the Panther net. Green Mountain senior Matt Rominger (Elmira, N.Y.) made eight stops for the Eagles.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action Sunday with a key game at Western Connecticut (12 noon). Green Mountain returns home to host Mitchell College on Saturday (12 noon).
