ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Jamal Luttamaguzi (Stockholm, Sweden) scored the only goal of the game Saturday afternoon to help the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team defeat Rochester Institute of Technology, 1-0, in the opening game of the second annual Doug May Classic, hosted by Nazareth College.
The Panthers will conclude the affair by facing host Nazareth Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Nazareth is coached by former PSU captain and All-Star defender Danny Gilbertson.
RIT, which was an NCAA Tournament team in 2004, had a 16-8 advantage over PSU in shots but could not convert a goal. The first half finished in a scoreless tie despite the Tigers having a 7-3 margin in shots.
Plymouth State got on the board at the 51:46 mark in the second half. Luttamaguzi ran onto a ball that was crossed into the penalty area and headed it past Matt Klosner (Lowville, NY/Lowville) for a 1-0 lead. That goal held up as the Panthers defense kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.
The second half saw RIT generate some good scoring chances but were unable to get one past Panthers freshman keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.), who recorded two saves en route to the shutout.
