WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 24 saves Saturday evening to lead the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team to a key 6-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University in an ECAC Northeast Conference game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Panthers got goals from three freshmen to build a 3-0 lead midway through the game. Johnson & Wales battled back to cut the margin to one goal (3-2) early in the third period, but the Panther line of juniors Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.), Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) and Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) tacked on three unanswered third-period goals to put the game away.
The outcome stopped a two-game losing streak for PSU and brings the Panthers back to .500 in the Northeast at 4-4-1 in league play, 7-8-2 overall, while Johnson & Wales dropped its second straight to drop to 6-3-0 in the Northeast, 7-10-2 overall.
Freshmen Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) potted first-period goals for the Panthers, and classmate Bobby Dashner (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored his first career goal at 10:18 of the second to give PSU the 3-0 lead.
Freshman Shawn Roach (Grapevine, Tex.) put JWU on the board with a short-handed goal at 11:26 of the second, and a power play goal by senior Florian Roth (Nuremburg, Germany) two minutes into the third made it a 3-2 game.
This would be Plymouth State’s night, though. Feeney scored unassisted at 3:20, and the final two goals had the same connection – Nickerson from Kane and Feeney – at 5:42 and 13:48.
PSU finished with a 32-26 advantage in shots. Wildcat freshman goalie Charlie Bacon (Hudson, Mass.) finished with 26 saves.
Plymouth State is home again on Wednesday, hosting Suffolk at Waterville Valley Ice Arena (6:00 p.m.) JWU is on the road again Wednesday at Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.)
