DANBURY, Conn. – Three Plymouth State University players posted double-doubles, including junior Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who tossed in a career-high 41 points, and the Panthers pulled out a 103-98 Little East Conference men’s basketball victory over defending champion Western Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
The Panthers extended their winning streak to six games and improved their record to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the LEC. Western Conn., which defeated Plymouth State in the closing seconds of last year’s LEC Championship game on the same court, dropped its second straight conference game and fell to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the league.
It was a close game the entire way. There were eight ties in the first half, which ended with a 46-43 Western advantage. The hosts maintained a single-digit advantage most of the second half, but PSU tied it at 76-all with under a minute remaining and the teams were deadlocked at 81-81 at the end of regulation. The two teams exchanged baskets in the first extra period and were still even, 88-88, after one overtime. After the 15th tie of the game at 92-92 with two minutes on the clock, the Panthers scored seven straight points and then held off the Colonials down the stretch.
Oglesby hit 12-of-20 from the field, with one three-pointer, and 16-of-20 from the free throw line, adding 15 rebounds, three blocks and five steals to his resume. Senior Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) finished with 15 points and 18 boards, nine of the offensive variety. He scored eight key points on put-backs late in the first OT and early in the second. Freshman Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, including eight straight key PSU points in the last two minutes of regulation. Panther guards Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) and Mike Loughlin (Manchester, N.H./West) chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The 41 points for Oglesby was the first 40-point game for a Plymouth State player since Adam DeChristopher tossed in 40 in an 89-84 win at Keene State on Feb. 17, 1999.
WCSU also had five players score in double figures, with three recording double-doubles. Marvin Evans had 25 points and 12 rebounds, Greg Cole provided 20 points off the bench, Jay Reginatto finished with 17 points, Jason Barnett ended with 12 points and 11 boards, and Jeff Gene added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
PSU returns home for another key LEC match-up Tuesday against arch-rival Keene State (7:30 p.m.).
