NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Junior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a power play goal 3:49 into sudden death overtime Saturday evening to give Plymouth State University a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in ECAC Northeast ice hockey action at the Hetland Ice Arena.
Londer scored the game-winner off a scramble in front of the net after the Panthers won a face-off in the Corsair zone. Sophomore Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) scored two goals for the second straight game for PSU to help force the overtime period.
Plymouth State came back twice to tie the score in the second period. UMD took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, N.J.) scored the only goal of the first period at the 10:57 mark, a power play goal from senior Eric Frank (Waltham, Mass.)
Topo LaCroix’s first of the game tied it 1:29 into the second period for the Panthers, assisted by juniors Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) and freshman Pat Turcotte (Goffstown, N.H.) The Corsairs regained the lead, 2-1 when senior Mike McPherson (Chelsea, Mass.) scored at the 9:25 mark. PSU tied it again on Topo LaCroix’s second of the game at 19:25. Once again, Turcotte and Goose LaCroix drew the assists.
UMD had a two-man advantage for 50 seconds late in the third period, and also had the benefit of a five-minute power play during a PSU major penalty, but the Panthers staved off the Corsairs’ attack.
The Corsairs out shot Plymouth State, 40-21. Panther goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 38 saves, while UMass Dartmouth freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, Mass.) made 18.
PSU, 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECAC Northeast, plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Castleton State (7:30 p.m.), while UMD, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in ECAC Northeast, returns to action when it hosts Worcester State Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
