PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The freshman goaltender on the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team was recognized Tuesday by the ECAC Northeast Conference for his performance for the Panthers last week.
Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was named ECAC Northeast Co-Goalie of the Week, the second time this season he has earned the honor. He was solid in goal last Saturday as PSU stopped a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Nichols College.
A 6’2”, 170-pound goalie, Helgesson stopped 26 of 27 shots to lead PSU to the conference win over Nichols. He helped PSU survive seven Nichols power plays, including a five-minute major and two 5-on-3’s. He allowed only one goal and is now second in the league in both goals against average (2.42) and saves percentage (.929).
PSU, 3-5-2 overall this season and 1-1-1 in conference play, returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 13, with a conference match-up at Stonehill College (7:00 p.m.).
