PLYMOUTH, N.H. – For the first time in four years, the Plymouth State University men’s lacrosse team is headed to the post-season.
The Panthers received an invitation Monday to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament. PSU is the sixth-seed and will travel to third-seeded Lasell College on Wednesday for a first-round match-up at 3:00 p.m. Plymouth State’s last post-season berth was also an ECAC appearance in 2001.
Western New England College (12-6) is the tournament’s top seed and receives a first-round bye. The other opening round contests on Wednesday include second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University (9-6) hosting seventh-seeded Castleton State College (9-5), and fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University (11-4) hosting fifth-seeded UMass Boston (10-6).
The highest remaining seed after Wednesday’s first-round games will host the tournament’s semifinals on Saturday and championship game on Sunday.
PSU, 7-7 overall, earned an invitation after finishing fourth in the Little East Conference during the regular season under second-year head coach Andrew Brauch. Plymouth State was eliminated from the LEC Tournament by UMass Boston in the first round. The Panthers have gone from four wins in 2002 to five wins in 2003 to six wins last season to, so far, seven victories this spring.
Lasell received an ECAC berth after finishing fourth in the Pilgrim League during the regular season. The Blazers were knocked out the Pilgrim League Tournament in the semifinals by eventual champion Springfield College.
This will be Plymouth State’s fourth appearance in the ECAC post-season tournament. PSU first participated in the event in 1988 and 1989, and then competed in 2001. The Panthers also made three straight Pilgrim League post-season appearances from 1998-2000.
