DANBURY, Conn. – Junior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) registered a career-high seven points Sunday afternoon, scoring five goals and two assists to lead the Plymouth State University men’s lacrosse team to a 13-6 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Skinner, who leads the Panthers in scoring with 12 goals and five assists, scored three times in a key seven-goal second period. Sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) added four goals and an assist in the victory as PSU improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the LEC.
The game was tied 1-1 late in the first quarter, but the visitors rattled off seven of the next eight goals and went on to a 9-3 halftime advantage. PSU maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way as WCSU dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The rest of PSU’s scorers were junior Pat O’Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) with a goal and two assists, and sophomore Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.), senior Eric Gobiel (Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Eric Oliver (Winchester, Mass.) with one goal each.
Freshman Mario Carvajal (Norwalk, Conn.) led the Colonials with three unassisted goals. Freshman Justin Monroe (Norwalk, Conn.), sophomore Nick Iodice (Newtown, Conn.) and senior Frank Candullo (Vista, N.Y.) chipped in with one goal apiece.
Plymouth State is scheduled to host Southern Maine on Tuesday, Apr. 6, weather permitting. The Colonials travel to intra-state rival and defending Little East champion Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
