ASCUTNEY, Vt. – The Plymouth State University men’s ski team continued to dominate the MacConnell Division of the Eastern Conference Saturday with a victory in the slalom race at the Boston College Winter Carnival held at Ascutney Mountain Resort.
The Panther women didn’t fare as well, with several skiers falling and the team ending up sixth out of 10 schools.
The PSU men had seven of the top 15 individual finishers in Saturday’s slalom, which included over 80 racers. All 10 Panthers finished in the top 27 as PSU easily cruised past the rest of the field, which included (in order of finish) BC, UMass Amherst, Babson, Colby-Sawyer, MIT, Brown, Saint Anselm, UConn and New England College.
Freshman Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) and junior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) continued to pace the Panthers, finishing second and third overall in the two-run combined time. Sophomore Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.), junior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.), sophomore Bill Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) finished consecutively in the 10-11-12-13 spots for the Panthers, and senior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) placed 15th.
Senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was PSU’s top finisher in the women’s race, just as she has been in all seven outings this season. Swaffield took eighth among the 60-plus women’s skiers, finishing in the top eight in every race this winter. Freshman Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) was the next Panther to cross the finish line Saturday, placing 35th.
Boston College captured the women’s team scoring, finishing ahead of (in order of finish) Brown, UMass, Colby-Sawyer, Smith, PSU, Babson, MIT, Saint Anselm and UConn.
The ski racing continues Sunday at Ascutney with the giant slalom.
