PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Chris Childs (Cranston, R.I.) figured on both goals Saturday afternoon as Rhode Island College captured a 2-0 win over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men¹s soccer contest.
The Panthers, who came into the game in first place in the LEC, dropped their second straight conference game and fell to 9-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the LEC. RIC, which has won five off its last six games, is 9-5-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Little East. PSU and RIC are tied for second in the conference behind Keene State (4-1-1). The Anchormen are also 5-0-1 in their last six meetings with PSU.
RIC capitalized on a free kick from midfield in the 32nd minute to open the scoring. Junior Jameson Gonzalez (Johnston, R.I.) put fed the ball to Childs, who headed it to freshman Jose Talavera (Providence, R.I.) just outside the penalty box. Talavera then flicked it past Plymouth State sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH) for his sixth goal of the season.
The Anchormen added an insurance goal less than two minutes later as Childs tried to run down a long pass. Shute came out of the 18-yard box and tried to one-time the ball past the oncoming Childs, but the senior forward knocked down the low-level kick and shot the ball into the open net.
RIC outshot the Panthers, 25-16, in the game and 13-3 in the decisive first half. RIC junior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, R.I.) made eight saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season. Shute made seven stops for the Panthers.
PSU returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game at Framingham State (3:00 p.m.) before returning home to host UMass Dartmouth next Saturday in the regular season finale (1:00 p.m.) RIC plays Tuesday at Roger Williams.
