PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan/Tilton Prep-N.H.) scored his second straight game-winning overtime goal Thursday evening, lifting Plymouth State University’s men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater State College in a non-conference match at rainy Panther Field.
Takeru, who scored in overtime last Saturday to give PSU a win over Salem State by the same score, was assisted by junior Dustin Moya (Thorton, Col.) on Thursday’s game-winner. The Panthers are now 2-0-1 on the season, while Bridgewater State drops to 1-2-1.
PSU scored a go-ahead goal to take a 1-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the second half when junior Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H.) knocked in his third goal of the season. The Bears scored the equalizer with just seconds remaining in regulation play when senior midfielder Ian Duggan (Plympton, Mass.) bent a free kick around the Panther defensive wall, forcing overtime.
PSU finished with a 22-9 advantage in shots. PSU sophomore keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) earned the win by making two saves, while Bears keeper John Naughton (Braintree, Mass.) finished with 12 stops.
The Panthers continue their five-game home stand this Saturday with the Little East Conference opener against UMass Boston at Panther Field (1:00 p.m.) The Bears play another LEC school Thursday when they travel to Eastern Connecticut for a 4:00 p.m. game.
