PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University’s men’s soccer team received an ECAC New England Tournament berth on Monday, and will play a first-round game this Wednesday.
The Panthers (9-7-1) will make their second straight post-season appearance, their seventh in the last eight years and 10th in the last 12 years. PSU is the eighth seed and will travel to top-seeded MIT (12-3-1) for Wednesday’s first round game (1:30 p.m.).
The other first round games are #7 UMass Dartmouth (11-6-1) at #2 Salve Regina (13-7), #6 Johnson & Wales (11-8-1) visiting #3 Rhode Island College (11-8-2), and #5 Southern Maine (11-4-3) at #4 Coast Guard (10-7). The semifinals and finals are Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-14, with the higher seeded teams hosting each game.
Plymouth State, led by third-year head coach Rob Wright, received the ECAC berth after finishing third in the Little East Conference during the regular season and getting knocked out of the LEC Tournament in the semifinals by Rhode Island College, 3-1.
The Panthers were the second seed in last year’s ECAC Tournament. PSU tied seventh-seeded Salve Regina in the first-round game and advanced on penalty kicks (3-1), but then lost in overtime to Keene State in the semifinals, 3-2.
MIT received the ECAC’s top seed after winning the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference regular season title but being upset in the NEWMAC Tournament championship game by Babson, 2-1. The Engineers were defeated by Western New England in the first round of the 2002 ECAC Tournament, but received an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Wheaton, 1-0.
PSU, which has made 16 NCAA appearances, is playing in its ninth ECAC Tournament. The Panthers’ previous selections came in 1973, 1981, 1985, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2001, and 2003, winning championships in ’81, ’85 and ’01.
