On April 19, at a ceremony on the Plymouth State University campus, Friends of the Arts Regional Arts Council received the WMURTV/ Citizens Bank Community Champions Award. The award is given quarterly and focuses on a different aspect of community service. The focus for the second quarter of 2005 is on community arts.
Organizations usually nominate themselves, but due to the unique relationship between Friends of the Arts and Plymouth State University, the nomination was made by Plymouth State. “We’ve been partners for 31 years in the Plymouth community,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement Retha Lindsey Fielding. In addition to the performances that Friends of the Arts present at the Silver Cultural Arts Center, they have worked with the University in recent years to develop educational programming for public schools to access arts exhibits in the Karl Drerup Art Gallery and other PSU exhibition spaces.
“It is not easy for community arts organizations to obtain the funding that is necessary for program delivery and organizational longevity,” Fielding said.”This award gives Friends of the Arts a $25,000 grant, media coverage, promotional assistance and volunteer support. We are very happy that they are the Community Champions for this quarter and that the organization will receive these generous benefits.”
