BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team split four matches and placed 10th Sunday at the annual New England Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State College.
The Panthers, who were seeded 10th in the 15-team event, were defeated by #7 seeded University of Southern Maine, 33-12, in the opening round. PSU bounced back with a 31-12 decision over #15-seeded Western New England College and a 28-20 victory over #11 Worcester Polytechnic Institute, but dropped the 9th/10th place meet to #9 Norwich, 39-11.
Freshmen Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) and Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) paced the Panthers with three wins apiece. Laganas went 3-0 at 149 pounds, including a pair of pins, to improve his season record to 15-7, while Wilkinson posted a 3-1 record at 125 pounds, and now has a 9-6 mark on the season.
Juniors Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) and freshmen Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial.) and Dan Burke (Salem, N.H.) each collected two wins on the day. Schieding won two bouts at 157 pounds after dropping his first match at 165; Wilbert won his only two encounters at 285 pounds, including his fourth pin of the season; and St. Ours and Burke swept the 197-pound matches, each winning twice with one pin. St. Ours extended his team-best record to 17-2, while Schieding is now 13-10, Wilbert improved to 11-5, and Burke is 8-5.
PSU, now 4-9 in duals this season, travels to Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday for a dual with WPI (6:00 p.m.)
