PSU President’s Office Hosts Student Art Juried Exhibition

July 26th, 2007 by Adam

Plymouth State University President Sara Jayne Steen has initiated a Plymouth State University Student Art Collection and an award competition. The Student Art Collection will be a living collection exhibited throughout the year in public spaces, offices, and meeting rooms across campus. The student works will be catalogued and available upon request for exhibition. Art department chair Dr. Cynthia Vascak is pleased that the University is working to bring student art to the public eye.

“We are deeply grateful to President Steen for this outstanding opportunity to celebrate the talents and achievements of our students,” said Vascak.

The President’s Award is awarded to a student for an outstanding work selected from the annual Juried Student Show. This work will become part of the newly formed PSU Student Art Collection and the artist will receive a cash award of $500. Works will be displayed throughout the campus in public spaces and offices. Two works were awarded this year to start off the collection, the monotype, “Winter” by Anthony Cormier and the ceramic vessel, “Untitled Vessel” by Erica Bourne.

The Presidential Juried Exhibition is a newly formed series of two annual juried shows of student works selected specifically for exhibition in the President’s Office. The intent is to maintain an exhibition of student artworks throughout the year. The current selections for the President’s Award are now on display in the President’s office.

“These two initiatives allow us to recognize our students’ excellence and extend community enjoyment of their work. This campus is vibrant, and art, history, and the life of the mind should be reflected wherever we look,” said Steen.

The student artists chosen for the first Presidential Exhibition this spring include Ali Lawrence (Ceramics), Carla Blakely (Ceramics), Chelsi Rae Allen (Painting), Meghan Swanson (Printmaking), and Ryan Baird (sculpture).
