PLYMOUTH, N.H.-Plymouth State University’s Rugby Club pulled out a thrilling 22-17 win over Furman to win the National Division III Club Rugby national championship.
The Norsemen, coached by Dwayne Mann, achieved a perfect, 8-0 regular season record in winning the New England rugby club title. Plymouth then went to Hamilton, N.Y. for the national club rugby final four tournament and defeated Hamilton 38-8 to earn a spot in the April 27 title game.
The Norsemen’s Rob Howes was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The national title trophy will be displayed in the HUB Fireplace Lounge beginning Wednesday, April 30.
As a club sport, the team is self-sustaining. Each player pays $30 a year to register their national certification. They schedule their own games against other schools, book the referees, allot their team budget to PSU and reserve their transportation to games.
